LASE is a first-if-its-kind multi-university group that brings together two proud institutions – the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent – into a single structure, creating a ‘super university’ in which each institution retains its name, identity and local presence.

The merger of Greenwich and Kent to create the LASE University Group enables us to combine our collective strengths and gives us greater resilience and a stronger foundation to transform lives across London and the South East. Our two universities have been working together for more than 20 years and collaborate well. This is an opportunity to do even more together, strengthen our offering and bring greater benefits to support the region’s needs.

The shared vision of the two universities is to deliver education without boundaries from city to coast. By coming together to form the LASE University group, our collective strength will mean we can do much more to transform lives and power inclusive opportunity, with students placed at the heart of everything we do. This is an evolution of our relationship, through which we can continue to provide world-class teaching, grow our research tackling real-world challenges, and ultimately foster a culture where staff, students and communities thrive, collaborate and succeed together.

All staff at Greenwich and Kent will be employed by the LASE University Group from 1 August 2026. LASE has an innovative and collaborative high-performance culture and we are committed to creating opportunities for growth and personal development through our scale and combined strength.

For our students, nothing will change: they will continue to apply to, study at, and graduate from Greenwich or Kent. Each institution will continue to preserve its own brand and student experience, while benefiting from the scale and opportunities that the new group can provide. This includes a join commitment to putting students at the heart of what we do providing outstanding education and an inclusive environment where all students, regardless of background, can prosper.

We have strong partnerships at both universities that we have built over many years, and we are committed to maintaining and strengthening these. By coming together as multi university group that covers a larger geographical region, we will continue to drive regional prosperity and can offer partners access to broader expertise, greater scale and new opportunities for collaboration.

Alumni are an important and valued part of our universities. We hope that this merger will grow and strengthen the alumni community and create more opportunities. Alumni will retain their qualification from the university they studied at and remain part of the community of the University of Greenwich or the University of Kent.

LASE University Group will be a research and innovation powerhouse. We have significant research strengths across both Greenwich and Kent, such as in health and wellbeing, food and sustainability, and the creative industries. It will enable us to continue this important research and drive real world impact.

We already have academics who collaborate with each other across research, so coming together in the LASE University Group will further enable the sharing of facilities, sharing of networks and contacts, and access to the wider funding landscape.

Current commitments will remain unchanged and partnerships will continue as they are. We will explore opportunities to scale and expand research capacity where we have shared priorities.

There are no planned changes for, or impact on, any prospective undergraduate or postgraduate students applying to study at Greenwich or Kent, whether based in the UK or overseas. New students will apply for their chosen course at the University of Greenwich of the University of Kent in the usual way, and they will then study at and graduate from the university they have chosen.

Both the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent continually review their portfolio and curricula to ensure they are offering the courses that students want to study and are sought after by employers. This will not change, as the universities become part of the LASE University Group. Like all universities, Greenwich and Kent will also always be subject to normal workforce changes as people move on or progress, but there are clear processes in place to ensure this will not affect your ability to begin and complete your course.

No, there are no planned relocations of teaching for all current students or for those applying for entry in 2026 or 2027.

No - UKVI has confirmed that all existing student visa sponsorship arrangements with the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent will simply transfer to the new LASE University Group.

Our students already benefit from shared library facilities across the two universities. In the coming months once the new Group is established, we will discuss further access to facilities and services across all of our campuses and will update students in due course.

Students at the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent will continue to access excellent student support services in the usual way. Over time, we will enhance the offering through shared resources, and we will update students on developments if there is any change.

There will be no impact on the current bursaries or scholarships offered by the University of Greenwich or the University of Kent.

Degrees will continue to be awarded by the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent, as part of the LASE University Group.

Yes, both universities will continue to recruit and select students separately, so if you wish to be considered for courses at both Greenwich and Kent, you will need to apply separately to both, via UCAS.

No, you will be taught at your chosen university and you will graduate from that university, too. The only difference is, your university is now part of a bigger, more resilient group – similar to the way in which some schools are part of a multi-academy trust.
